New Windows 10 computer is faster

Recently, I got a new Windows 10 computer. I talked about it in this post.

I have now installed almost all of my programs. There are still a couple of programs left to install but they are  quite complicated to install so I will have to get my dad to install them. I have noticed that it is much faster than my old Dell Windows 8 computer, and everything loads faster. This might be because it is Windows 10, which is newer so it is supposed to be faster and better. However, it could also be because this computer has 128 gigabytes of SSD (Solid State Drive.) SSD is faster than a spinning disc, so things on it load faster. I have one terabyte of spinning disc which is called the “Local Disc” on this computer. I put all of the important files on the SSD so that they load faster and put everything else, including games, on the Local Disc. Unfortunately, when something is already installed, you can’t move it to another disc, and I accidentally installed Steam and Minecraft on the SSD. Oh well, at least they will load faster now.

The computer also came with NVIDIA already installed, and there are Metro app versions of Skype and VLC Media Player that load faster than the desktop versions.

Overall, this new computer is much better than my old Dell computer, and hopefully it lasts as long as the Dell computer did (The Dell computer lasted for more than five years.)

Trying out some new programs

Spoiler Alert! The comments of this post contain spoilers about the puzzle in the post. To avoid the spoiler, complete the puzzle before you look at the comments!

Today I was trying out some new programs that I can use to make things, and also using some old ones. This post is quite long, so click on Continue Reading to see what I made:

Windows 8 computer crash

My Windows 8 Dell computer crashed this morning, and it would not restart properly. Eventually, I had to “refresh” my computer. The computer was reset to what it was like one week ago, and then it worked properly. I had to re-install a few programs that had been installed recently, including Google Chrome. Minecraft, Steam, Civilization 6, The Sandbox Evolution and Firefox had not been deleted when I “refreshed” the computer after the crash, but they were not the most recent version; they had been “downgraded.” I had to update them to get the most recent software back on my computer. My clock was also set back by five hours and I had to adjust it.

However, I was unable to re-install NVIDIA, which was removed from my computer when I “refreshed” it. The download link I used to install it before has disappeared, and althhough there are other download links, they don’t work on my computer for some reason. NVIDIA makes programs run faster, especially computer games, so some of my games might lag a bit now, but at least everything still works.

This crash proves that it is important to back up files on your computer, just in case there is a crash. I have synced all of my browsers by turning on syncing on Firefox and creating a Google account to sign in to Chrome. Syncing browsers means you have the same bookmarks, settings and history on all of the devices connected to the sync, but it also stores a copy of your bookmarks online so that you won’t lose any data in a crash. My dad also wrote a computer program on Cygwin for me, which backs up my important files like documents, stories, pictures and videos. Because of these programs, I didn’t lose any important information. Backing up your files is always a good idea and I reccomend it.

Term 2 starts

ℹ️ The meme in the end of term one post isn’t working anymore, but unfortunately I can’t remember what it said to I can’t re-make it. If you can remember what it said, please comment and tell me so I can fix it.

It’s the start of Term 2 at Wellington College. Actually, it started last week but there were so many assignments to do and other posts to write that I forgot to write this post. Since I made a meme at the end of term 1, I will make another meme now:

Imagine if you had to start everything all over again every time a new school term started, as if you were making a new Minecraft survival world. And your first house had to look like the one in the meme. Yeah, that would suck.

There will probably be some Board Games Club posts soon, and maybe even a few Dungeons and Dragons posts if everyone turns up, but Dungeons and Dragons wasn’t on this week and nobody turned up for Board Games Club. Hopefully, both of them will be on next week!
